Thai people love to eat, they are either eating, thinking about it or talking about it. So, it’s not surprising that everywhere you look in Phuket there is food. Thai food is the best there is in Asia, it’s fresh and tasty and the combination of simple ingredients, delicious aromas and spiciness is unique.

Some of the best food you’ll eat in Thailand will come from a simple small food stand on the street, watch for where the locals eat and follow suit. This is what we like to eat on a typical day in Phuket in-between organising our Phuket day tours.

Pancakes for Breakfast

If we’re not busy on the boat with a Phang Nga tour, then for breakfast there’s a choice between Kanom Jeen and Roti. Kanom Jeen means soft white noodles and comes in a big bowl with a choice of curries, a side dish piled with fresh vegetables and even a boiled egg. Roti is what you might call a pancake, there are different kinds but we like ours with a side serving of curry and 2 fried eggs on top.

Lunchtime Noodles
At lunchtime, we often eat noodles. There are heaps of noodle soup places around but our favourite is Pad Thai. This isn’t spicy at all and is made with rice noodles, usually prawns but can be chicken, and with egg and peanuts all wrapped up in an omelette. It’s delicious.

If it’s not a noodle day then its Krapow Moo, a very traditional dish that is available at most places. You can get it with pork, chicken or beef and it’s cooked with holy basil leaves and chilli. Generally, a fried egg is placed on top and it’s served with steamed rice. It is cheap but so flavoursome, and unless you say ‘NO!’, it will come with a big chilli hit.

Add Spice for Dinner

Dinnertime calls for Geng Kheaw Wan Gai. This is a green curry with chicken and eggplant which any Thai restaurant will have on the menu. It can be a bit spicy but just ask them to tone it down, Thai people in Phuket are used to foreigners and their inability to eat very spicy food.
Isan food is some of the cheapest around but that doesn’t mean it isn’t delicious. Som Tam is a spicy plate of grated green papaya with fish sauce, lime juice, chillies, green beans, dry shrimps and peanuts.

It comes with salted black crabs but you can ask for them to be left out if you don’t like the taste. Try it first though, you might be pleasantly surprised! Its best when eaten with sticky rice, barbeque chicken and a chilled fresh coconut.

At La Moet we serve Thai food on board and most of the dishes are the Thai favourites. Our food is fresh and delicious so why not book a tour and come and try it?
